Background:
Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204) developed by ANGRAU during 1980s, is a highly popular rice variety among the farmers in South India and some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The variety has medium slender grain and excellent cooking qualities. It is a highly preferred rice variety among the farmers and consumers. However, the variety is extremely susceptible to bacterial blight of rice (a devastating rice disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae) and also susceptible to low phosphorous condition causing significant yield loss:
Technology Details:
DRR Dhan-60, a NIL line of Improved Samba Mashuri with >95% background recovery and tolerance to Low soil Phosphorous possessing QTL- Pup1 and bacterial leaf blight resistant with 3 genes (Xa21+xa13+xa5). It has seed to seed maturity of 125-130 days. Recorded average grain yield advantage of + 17.55 %, + 23.28 % and + 25.74 % and weighted average superiority + 12.79 %, +21.98% and +27.18% over the recurrent parent, Improved Samba Mahsuri under 60 kg/ha, 40 kg/ha and 20 kg/ha application of phosphorous. It exhibited resistant reaction to bacterial blight with a SI score of 2.6 (2018), 4.0 (2019) and 3.4 (2020). DRR Dhan 60 possesses medium-slender grain type with good HRR of 64.5 %, amylose content 23.23%, GC22 and ASV 7.0 and is comparable to the recurrent parent, Improved Samba Mahsuri in all the grain and cooking quality parameters.
